Memorandum of Understanding

The Parks Forward Initiative, led by the independent 12-member commission, was created to develop a new vision and long-term plan for a financially sustainable State Park System that meets the needs of California’s growing population and changing population. The Initiative was undertaken in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed in June 2013 by the California Natural Resources Agency, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and Resources Legacy Fund, a nonprofit organization acting on behalf of the California philanthropies providing support for the Initiative. The MOU sets forth the roles, responsibilities, and commitments of each party, as well as the goals, structure, and milestones for the Initiative. To read the MOU, click here.

To support implementation of the Parks Forward Commission’s recommendations, the parties entered into a new MOU in June 2015. To read the new MOU, click here.
